Planning: Mogliano base and logistics

The evening before, check trains on Trenitalia (Mogliano Veneto → Venezia Santa Lucia, 15–20 minutes) and book Doge's Palace and St Mark's campanile online if you travel in peak season. Day 1 needs comfortable shoes and zero luggage; day 2, if you choose islands, bring a vaporetto day pass or load the ACTV app. Leave by 8:30 to arrive in the city with margin.

Park at Mogliano station (free in the area) or reach the train by bike. Always validate vaporetto tickets. Keep cash for bacari that do not take cards on small amounts. Decide the night before your day 2 variant: Dorsoduro for museums and walks; islands for glass, colour and open lagoon.

• Train: frequent regionals, no mandatory seat reservation.
• Bookings: Doge's Palace, campanile, Accademia if planned.
• Day 2 island vaporetto: around €25, worth it with 4+ rides.

Day 1, morning: San Marco and surroundings

Arrive at Santa Lucia, quick breakfast at a bacaro in Cannaregio or walk towards San Marco following yellow signs (40 minutes) or vaporetto line 1 to Vallaresso (10 scenic minutes). Morning dedicated to Piazza San Marco: Basilica exterior and interior (booking recommended), campanile climb for the view, Doge's Palace visit with Bridge of Sighs.

Total time San Marco area: 3–4 hours at a calm pace. Avoid sitting for coffee in the square; an ombra in an alley costs less. If the Basilica queue is long, swap order: Doge's Palace first (booked slot), then campanile, then Basilica early afternoon when queues often shorten.

• 9:30–12:30: San Marco, Basilica, campanile, Doge's Palace.

Day 1, afternoon: Rialto and Grand Canal

From San Marco walk to Rialto (15–20 minutes): Rialto Bridge, market if still in morning hours, lunch at an osteria or cicchetti crawl. Afternoon on the Grand Canal: board vaporetto line 1 from Rialto towards Piazzale Roma or vice versa for the central stretch with Ca' d'Oro, Ca' Rezzonico and Ca' Foscari.

Get off at Accademia if you only want the bridge view, or continue to Ferrovia to see the full canal. Late afternoon: aperitivo in San Polo or return towards the station with a pause in Cannaregio. Train to Mogliano by 19:30–20:00 for a quiet evening outside the lagoon.

• Rialto lunch: cicchetti €12–18 or osteria €20–28.
• Vaporetto: one panoramic Grand Canal ride, 45 minutes all stops.
• Photos: Rialto Bridge and facades from the vaporetto.

Day 2, variant A: Dorsoduro and the Zattere

Second day without islands: from Santa Lucia cross Ponte dell'Accademia or take the vaporetto to Accademia. Morning at the Gallerie dell'Accademia (online booking) or Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Walk along the Zattere, visit Basilica della Salute (exterior and interior), Campo Santa Margherita for an authentic student-style lunch.

Afternoon: Squero di San Trovaso (gondola yard visible from the bridge), bacaro Al Squero or Schiavi, gelato and walk back to Ferrovia through less touristy districts. This variant does not need a vaporetto day pass: one or two single tickets at most. Ideal if weather is uncertain or you prefer art to boats.

• Accademia: 2 hours, Venetian Renaissance masterpieces.
• Peggy Guggenheim: 1–1.5 hours, modern, garden.
• Salute and Zattere: atmospheric sunset, less crowded than San Marco.
• Return: 30–40 minutes on foot to Santa Lucia.

Day 2, variant B: Murano and Burano

For islands leave early from Fondamente Nove (vaporetto line 4.1/4.2 to Murano, then change or line 12 to Burano). Murano: furnace with blown-glass demonstration, Glass Museum if you want depth, canal walk. Burano: colourful houses, fish lunch, leaning tower, optional lace museum.

Allow 4–5 hours between navigation and visits. Torcello is only possible if you leave very early and skip part of Murano. Late afternoon: vaporetto back to Fondamente Nove, short Cannaregio walk and train to Mogliano. Bring water, hat and a valid all-day ACTV ticket.

• Burano: 2 hours, photos, lunch, village atmosphere.

Differences from one day, mistakes to avoid

The one-day itinerary compresses San Marco, Rialto and a third element (Dorsoduro or islands) into a few hours with trade-offs. In two days San Marco breathes on day one morning; the Grand Canal has a dedicated afternoon; day two explores one coherent theme without returning to the centre. Do not repeat San Marco on day two: you have already seen the monumental heart.

Common mistakes: booking Doge's Palace on day 2 when you are on islands; forgetting the return vaporetto time; trying to add Torcello, Lido and Biennale to the same plan. With a Mogliano base you can extend to three or four lagoon days in the same week, alternating monuments, islands and food. The train advantage is flexibility: rain on day 2? Swap Dorsoduro and islands.
