Best Time to Visit the Veneto: Season Guide

Spring (March–May): light and mild temperatures

Spring is perhaps the most balanced season: long days, pleasant weather for walking in Venice and Treviso, green countryside and flowering in the gardens of Venetian villas. Easter and April bridge holidays bring peak crowds, book accommodation and trains in advance.

March can still be cool and rainy; April and May are ideal for families who want to use the Casa Lilla garden without summer heat. Fewer queues on vaporetti than in June–August.

• Cons: Easter and 25 April crowded, some rainy days.

Summer (June–August): sun, crowds and heat

Summer attracts the maximum number of visitors to Venice: San Marco and Rialto are dense, prices rise, humidity is felt. The winning strategy is to go out early, return mid-afternoon and use the Mogliano base for garden relaxation, exactly what a holiday home offers and a lagoon hotel does not.

June is slightly less intense than July–August. Ferragosto (15 August) actually reduces crowds in Venice because many locals are on holiday, a useful paradox for those staying in the area.

• Cons: heat, humidity, queues and high prices.
• Tip: Venice in the morning, afternoon at a villa or in Prosecco country.

Autumn (September–November): fog, harvest and calm

September and October are among experienced travellers' favourite months: fewer tourists, golden light, temperatures still good. It is the perfect period for the Prosecco Hills, Venetian villas and Treviso with the first spritz of the season.

November brings fog in the lagoon, cinematic atmosphere in Venice, and more frequent acqua alta. It should not scare you: with boots and tide information (Hi!Tide app) you experience a different, more intimate Venice.

• Cons: shorter days, rain and acqua alta in November.
• Events: Regata Storica (September), local festivals.

Winter (December–February): silence and Carnival

Winter in the lagoon is not for everyone, but it offers almost deserted Venice (except Carnival), lower prices and table coffee without fighting for a seat. In Mogliano Veneto the climate is slightly more continental: rare frosts but possible, heating in the house essential.

Carnival (February) is a booking peak: if you come in that period, organise months ahead. Outside Carnival, February is the most economical and quiet month for exploring museums and churches without distractions.

• Cons: damp cold, reduced hours on some islands.
• Carnival: masks, events, targeted crowding.

Practical tips for every season

Whatever the month, book Scrovegni Chapel, major museums and ferries in advance if travelling in high season. For Venice as a day trip, the train from Mogliano Veneto avoids parking stress all year round.

If you have flexibility, choose May or September: the best compromise between climate, prices and crowds. With small children, avoid August in the lagoon and prefer June or the first week of September, same sun, less crush.
